As part of QFES’ response to the issue of the historic use of Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF), in 2017 the department implemented a voluntary health program for the paid and volunteer workforce. This program was due to finish on 30 June 2019, but has been extended for 12 months.

The program is available free of charge to current and former fire fighters – both paid and volunteer – and mechanical services personnel who may have come into contact with foams during their service with QFES.

It includes a free consultation with an independent health practitioner and, if desired, associated blood screening.

While screening is not expected to provide definitive guidance about an individual’s health, it will provide a baseline for individuals and QFES for future reference as further research is conducted on the health and environmental impacts of AFFF.

Staff or volunteers with health or blood test related enquiries should email QFES Workplace Health and Safety at [email protected]

You can also find more information on AFFF on the QFES website.
